The Polytechnic was established in 1980 with a certificate course in Library Science and Radio & TV Technology. The first diploma course in Chemical Engg. (Pulp & Paper Technology) was started in 1983. The status of the polytechnic became grant – in aid w.e.f 1st April, 1990. At present the polytechnic is organized into 6 engineering departments, viz Chemical, Computer, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil along with the common Applied Science department. All the courses are approved by All India Council of Technical Education, New Delhi and affiliated with Haryana State Board of Technical Education, Haryana.

This prestigious polytechnic has twice been awarded the ’Best Polytechnic of Northern India’ for the years 2002-03 and 2008-09 by NITTTR Chandigarh (under NHRD, New Delhi). It has also been awarded the Sardar Ajmer Singh Sarav Memorial Running Trophy for the Best Polytechnic of Haryana in the year 2010-11 by the Directorate of Technical Education, Haryana.

Seth Jai Prakash Polytechnic Damla designed and fabricated a U.V Decontamination box. Team Damla designed and got COVID-19 Sample Testing kiosk fabricated and was donated one kiosk to Civil Hospital, Yamunanagar  and two kiosks were donated to Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantt . The Automated Disinfection Chamber was successfully installed at Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantt.
